It was our privilege to assist the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) in its first stage of economic recovery after forest fires devastated the region in May.

EDA and the RMWB established the Wood Buffalo Business Recovery Hotline to help its business community recover after the costliest natural disaster in Canadian history. The Hotline was designed to register small businesses, gather information about their immediate needs and provide access to various resources, including providing emergency financial relief on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross.

We are proud to report the Hotline reached its goal, providing 3,496 small businesses with $1000 in emergency financial aid. This support was critical in getting businesses in the region back on their feet as quickly as possible.

As we now step aside to let the RMWB embark on a new phase of support for businesses, we wish them all the best as they continue to roll-out other elements of their business and economic recovery plan.

It's true, if you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten.

What if, instead of chasing the mega project like everyone else, you created an entrepreneurial ecosystem of diverse, individual, self-sustaining primary income generators that sell their product or service outside the region?  What are the attributes that such a system would need to have?

To find the answers join EDA next week for its next Marketing Master's Webinar:

Why Gold Collar Workers Are Your Community's Key to Growth
And what you can do to attract and retain them:

    Friday, September 30, 2016
    12:00 - 1:30 pm MST
    Online
Register here *Please note all fees are in USD

    What you will learn:

    • Change the local mindset to embrace a new approach.
    • Know the unspoken truths about economic development.
    • Create and grow an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
    • Focus on results, not just activity.
    • Find your niche in a crowded marketplace

This anticipated economic development funding program is part of the Jobs Plan Budget that was announced this spring. This grant program can be applied for through two streams: the community economic development stream and the regional economic development stream.

The regional economic development stream projects are those that reflect a collaborative approach between communities and supportive partners to achieve a positive regional impact based on a shared economic vision for the future. They begin at $25,000 and fund up to 50 per cent of the project’s value.
